EMT - Initial Training

NHCPR's EMT (formally EMT-Basic) program prepares you to respond to emergencies and provide stabilization, on-scene treatment, and ambulance transport of ill or injured patients. The core education includes CPR, anatomy and physiology, airway management, patient assessment, care of medical and traumatic emergencies, blood borne pathogens protection, patient extrication and transport, HazMat response, and incident command.

Audience:  Individuals interested in becoming certified as a National Registry of EMTs®  Emergency Medical Technician.

Course Format: Didactic, practical, online and clinical.

Course Length: 200 +/- hours     Clinical Length: 16 +/- hours at a hospital and/or ambulance.

Course Cost: See course listing on the right. This price includes the course, books, CPR training with the card, clinical liability insurance, clinical uniform use, blood pressure cuff and stethoscope, lab fees, hand outs and testing fees.

Class Availability: If the class displays  "ENROLL NOW"  there is still space in the class.  Full classes will display  "Sorry, Enrollment Full"

Schedule:  The class schedule link is located above the "ENROLL NOW" link for the class.

Deposit: $300.00 deposit required when you click the "enroll now" link.  This non-refundable deposit is applied to the course fee.

Late Enrollment Fee: Enrollment within 7 days of the class start date will incur a $25.00 late enrollment fee.

Additional student costs: Immunizations, Criminal Background Checks (depending on clinical site), other incidental costs.

Massachusetts Residents: Effective July 1, 2013, Massachusetts will be accepting the NREMT certification received after taking this course.

Prerequisites:  Students must be at least 18 years old upon program completion. Students must be a high school graduate or have your GED.  Those that are still in high school must provide a letter of recommendation from the school principal or guidance counselor before acceptance.  CPR certification is NOT required to enroll as this is taught in the EMT class.  High-speed Internet, a computer with speakers and the ability to print and email is required.  Students will also be required to bring in a tablet greater than 7 inches or laptop to every class.

Students are required to obtain and bring into class proof of the following immunizations by the 3rd week of class. They are:

  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR): either proof of MMR immunization within the last 8 years or a positive titer (a blood draw showing that immunization already exists).
  • Tetanus (DT, DPT or TD): immunization must be within the last 10 years.
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox): Documentation of both varicella vaccine shots, or a positive varicella titer.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine series: documentation showing that the Hepatitis B series of immunizations (total of three doses) has been started by the end of the first month of class, or, documentation showing a positive Hep B titer.
  • Recent Flu Shot: some clinical sites may require this depending on the status of the flu season
  • Negative TB test. Negative TB skin test (PPD): skin test date must be less than 6 months before beginning your clinical rotation. Persons with a history of a positive PPD must provide documentation of a recent chest x-ray and a review of symptoms within the past 12 months. If a chest x-ray is abnormal, clinician clearance must also be provided.

Certification: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs test for EMT certification.
